Came across an interesting Russian artist recently, which I wanted to share…
Oscar Rabin, was born in 1928 and, in his early works, did fascinating paintings of Russian life and culture.
The “de-facto leader of the Soviet non-conformist artists”, Oscar Rabin relies heavily on symbolism to portray Russian life and in other pictures, while using a pre-Cubist/Expressionist type of style that unites both “reality and imagination”.
You can see what I mean in such a picture as Violin in the Cemetery from the 1970s or any of the paintings on his biography page below or here. He was forced to emigrate from the USSR in 1978 and now lives in Paris. Symbolism is still a main element threaded through his work.
