Whilst strolling in a card shop recently, I came upon the beautiful work of Rene Gruau (1909-2004) and wanted to share a bit about him.
Beginning his career in Paris in 1924, his streamlined and chic fashion artwork, which generally involves the use of deep colours and few lines, is very similar to Erte‘s. Credited with beginning the ‘New Look’ in the 1940s, which impacted haute couture, theatre, art and commercial design, Gruau has worked with such names as Christian Dior, Balenciega, Balmain and Givenchy and also done work for magazines Elle and Vogue.
Today, his works are collected and exhibited by some of the best art institutions in the world including the Louvre.
