Book review: Rubber Gloves or Jimmy Choos?, by Faith Bleasdale

If you’re looking for quintessential chick lit – ie light-hearted, easy reading then look no further. This story is all about Ruth, a truly ‘traditional’ (now hailed as old-fashioned), woman and a few of her stereotypical ‘turn of the millennium’ girlfriends.
Beginning the novel with Ruth’s days in college, we learn all about her relationship with Ben – the love of her life – and their break-up, which also breaks Ruth’s heart. After the first 40 or so pages of the book describing Ruth’s college days, the rest of the book is a ‘whiny’ account of her missing Ben, only ever wanting to be a housewife who takes care of her ‘man’, and more whining about all the jobs she takes and can’t stand.
Although the book has funny moments, which detail her failed escapades with various men (because she can’t get over Ben), and, those of her friends, sadly there is generally no point to it. You don’t come away feeling as there’s really an ending to it – just a long account of Ruth’s many shags. Chalk this book up as amusing but of no real substance.
